Are you getting the referrals you want? If not, here’s WHY…

I want you stop right now, this very second, and do a quick experiment.? Don’t worry, it won’t be hard, so you can let out a big, “whew!”

Here’s the experiment.

Feel your trousers, your pants, your shorts, your pantaloons, your bell-bottoms, or your boxer shorts…or, your bare buttocks against the seat in which you are a sitting. And if you’re standing, feel your shoes, sneakers, claude-hoppers, sandals, moccasins, socks, hose, heels, flippers, or toes against the floor.

Got it? Okay, what point I am trying to prove? Here it is:

Until I called this to your attention, you were not feeling this physical sensation.

Okay, so you were feeling, it, but not consciously like when you bite your tongue when you’re eating a meal (don’t you hate that?)

You were bombarded with other stimuli, data, information, noise, clutter, and stuff to where your brain could only focus on a few things at a time.

Now what does this have to do with referrals?

Everything. You see your current customers and network of people are not thinking of you right now — they aren’teven thinking of their own FEET or PANTS (had you already forgotten the conscious feeling yourself…). They are worried about paying…

  • their mortgage, 
  • their bills, 
  • their kids report card, 
  • their weight, 
  • getting THEIR  current customers or next clients
  • getting their prescription,
  • getting the oil changed in the car
  • picking up that birthday present
  • checking their email
  • a friend who is mad at them
  • something someone said about work

 

So when you wonder why you aren’t getting the referrals you need its because quite frankly, they ain’t thinking of you, buddy.

Nope, probably not. So when a situation or opportunity comes up to your customer or clients he or she often times doesn’t speak up and say, “you gotta use my guy/gal”

They are awesome, etc.

Because the brain can only handle so much information, that he or she will go? ga-ga-goo-go if presented with too much.

Okay, so you might be skeptical right now, so I’ll prove it….feel your pants and feet again, okie dokie?

You had forgotten already? Right…be honest now.

So you got to stay in front of them, stay in touch.  And I’ll be honest, this is really only one part of the equation.

And 10 x 0 is still 0. To really make progress we need another

10, so 10 x 10 can equal 100.  Does that make sense?
