Bombs – Have you ever had something Bomb?
This past weekend I went to see a movie. I had saw many previews for it so I thought I’d check it out and have a nice funny evening.
Well, it bombed.
The movie was not funny. In fact, the movie could not even hold my attention — which I consider to be the worst possible outcome of a movie. If you find yourself daydreaming in a movie, I think that is pretty bad.
Now some people may disagree and not think that the movie bombed, but in my opinion it did and a lot of the reviews out there agree with me.
So, what can we learn from this movie that bombed?
Well, to begin with it had 2 big “stars” that were cast in the movie. So it isn’t like it was the “nobody” actors. It also had a director that had done big movies in the past that were successful. So, it isn’t that, was it.
The idea also seemed to be funny, and the previews were interesting. So what is the issue?
To be honest, I think this is just how life works out sometimes.
And this is especially true of business. Sometimes you will do everything right (or almost everything right) and things won’t work out. They will bomb, or go nowhere. Certain projects won’t take off as well as you think they should.
So what can you do to avoid this?
Several things.
First, do more projects. If you only have one thing in the works to grow your business that ”one thing’ better involve a lot of things. Because if that one thing doesn’t work out and you go back to the drawing board that is going to be very disheartening.
Two, learn from the mistakes. This isn’t always easy, but solicit other people’s opinions on why things didn’t work out. Many times you can get feedback on why something didn’t work.
Does this make sense?
Third, do more projects. Yes, I realize this is the same as number 1 but the faster you “fail forward” the more you can learn fromyour mistakes and make the adjustments more quickly.
You can learn from other people’s experiences and your own experiences. And I prefer to learn from other people’s mistakes, but at the same time there is no substitute for “doing it yourself.”
Remember, it doesn’t matter what you KNOW in business. It matters what you can do and implement successfully.
So don’t beat yourself up if something doesn’t work like you want it to. Some of the smartest business people in the world have lots of failures. It is completely okay. Just pick yourself back up and move forward, but take everything you can from what you learned.
